TDR has published a new strategy for intersectional gender research
TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, aims to support effective and innovative global health research. By promoting the translation of evidence into interventions, the burden of infectious diseases shall be reduced, particularly in the most vulnerable populations.

Project ACAM – Mandacaru: call for donations
One Health Institute Heukelbach is actively supporting the project ACAM-Mandacaru which aims to improve education and health in an urban slum in Fortaleza/Brazil. For more than 10 years, the project has benefitted hundreds of people living in one of the most underprivileged communities in the city of Fortaleza, capital of Ceará State in Northeast Brazil.
Fortaleza city council has set up a general curfew last week, as the coronavirus/covid-19 pandemic has reached devastating levels in the city.
Favela communities with their overcrowded conditions are at highest risk for increased domestic violence, unemployment, undernutrition and high coronavirus infection rates. ACAM-Mandacaru supports the community with protective masks and food donations, as the kindergarten serving 76 children and the teenager projects had to be closed, perpetuating further the negative situation in the mostly affected families.
Any help will be welcome. Donations can be made at the following bank accounts:
IBAN: DE15 5019 0000 4202 0680 87 (bank account of Evanglische Kirche Weiterstadt); purpose of transfer: “Spende Mandacaru Brasilien”
For donations from Brazil: Banco do Brasil, Agência 3140-2, Conta Corrente: 55544-4, CNPJ: 12.859.165/0001-00
Donation receipts will be issued upon request. More information can be obtained at info@one-health-institute.com

World Chagas Disease Day celebrated for the first time in 2020
On 14 April 2020, the global community has celebrated the World Chagas Disease Day for the first time. Congratulations for this achievement!
About 110 years after its discovery, Chagas disease persists as a critical public health problem, having crossed the boundaries of Latin America. It is a neglected tropical disease, as evidenced by the ongoing scientific evidence gaps, the difficulty of incorporating new diagnostic and treatment technologies into the market, and the public health failures to ensure timely access to diagnosis and treatment associated with the development of consistent surveillance and control actions. As a result, there is a high burden of morbidity and mortality, and poor quality of life, poverty, stigma, as well as the fear of death persist for the affected people.
Despite considerable control efforts during the last years, Chagas Disease still affects millions of people, and continues being one of the most neglected tropical diseases!
Please see more details on the Chagas Disease Day at the WHO web site.
